So you’re scrolling through Pinterest, falling down the rabbit hole of ballroom weddings, elegant flower arrangements, and towering cakes, but nothing really screams you. Maybe you’re a more introverted couple, or the thought of a massive wedding at a venue just isn’t your vibe. Ever thought about ditching the traditional ballroom scene for something that’s a little more up your alley? Something like… a backyard wedding? If you’re considering hosting a backyard wedding in Florida, here are 5 extra reasons to say “Hell yeah!”
The Weather in Florida is Perfect for a Backyard Wedding
Florida weather can get a bad rep (no one can deny the humidity is somethin’ else), but if you choose the right time of year, a backyard wedding can be magical. In the spring and fall, the warm evenings are perfect for an outdoor ceremony and reception with your favorite people. Imagine you and your soulmate saying ‘I do’ as the sun is setting over the water, casting that golden glow that even the best filter can’t replicate.
But wait, there’s more. If you’re the go-with-the-flow type (which, tbh, most of my couples are!) then you won’t have to worry about stressing over minor weather surprises. A little rain shower could pass through and leave just in time for a rainbow to make an appearance during your vows. How freakin’ magical would that be?
Your Backyard Wedding, Your Rules
The beauty of a backyard wedding is that you call all the shots. There’s no venue manager giving you the side-eye about your slightly eccentric but totally ‘you’ decor ideas. Want a taco truck instead of a sit-down dinner? Make it happen. How about those adorable DIY centerpieces you’ve been eyeing on Etsy? Go for it. Dreaming of a midnight bonfire complete with s’mores and acoustic guitar sessions? Why the hell not! You make the rules, and seriously, nobody’s gonna stop you.
It’s Intimate AF
Massive ballrooms and event halls can sometimes feel like they swallow up the intimacy. With a backyard wedding, you’re getting an atmosphere that’s cozy and inviting, while still being able to turn up when necessary.
With a smaller guest list, you can actually spend quality time with your guests. And let’s be honest, those are the moments you’ll cherish forever. Also, let’s not ignore the fact that when the crowd is small, the bar line is short and the dance floor is always just the right amount of crowded. If you’re worried that Aunt Karen won’t have space to do the Macarena, trust me, she’ll find a way.
Plus, having a backyard wedding makes it a lot easier to steal your partner away for some extra intimate moments (with or without my camera and me there) throughout the day. Your wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye, and the last thing you want is to forget to actually spend time with your favorite person.
Backyard Weddings Can Be More Pocket Friendly
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: weddings can be expensive. But when you’re holding the event in your backyard, you’re cutting out a big chunk of expenses right off the bat. No venue fees mean you’ve got a bigger budget for what really matters. Maybe you’ll decide to splurge on a killer DJ who knows how to get even the most reluctant guests partying on the dance floor. Or maybe you cut costs to save up for an epic honeymoon in Paris, because why not!?
The Day After Brunch, Anyone?
So the vows have been said, the dance floor has been torn up, and the happy couple has made their grand exit. But who says the celebration has to end? If you’ve got friends and family crashing at your place, why not host a next-day brunch? And the best part is it’s in your backyard, so pajamas are not only allowed, they’re encouraged. Whip up some mimosas, set up a waffle station, and let everyone relive the magic of the previous day and soak in all that newlywed bliss with your friends and family.
Bonus: Your Pets Can Join In!
I mean, who could resist having their fur baby as the ring bearer or flower pup? In your own backyard, there’s no need to stress about pet policies or additional fees that traditional venues may have. You can enjoy your special day with your full family, paws and all, and we’ll be sure to get some adorable photos with your pet!
If you don’t have a backyard…
If you don’t have a readily available backyard to host your wedding but still want the same vibes, don’t worry! I recommend checking out local AirBnBs (that allow events) and see if there are any that have large backyards and ample getting-ready space. You never know what you’ll find, and most of the time this option is still less expensive than a traditional venue!
